QUESTION: Can I tax the sales tax credit if I file form 1040A and on what line do I take the credit? --TD

KEVIN ANSWERS:
No, you must itemize deductions -- and that means using the full-fledged 1040 Form -- to claim the deduction for state sales taxes paid.

That only makes sense if the sales tax deduction and all your other qualifying expenses exceed your standard deduction amount. The standard deduction on 2008 returns is $5,400 for singles and $10,900 for married couples filing joint returns.

my Feb 2010 Kiplingers referred me to this page but most of the referrals deal with 2008 and 2009 tax issues. Very disappointing. I "hear" the earlier property tax deduction hs been extended to 2009/10 taxes. What's up????
